Hard to beat the V&H. I had some long shots, nice medium loud, nice performance. NowI have Wet Dreamz by Pipe Dreamz, LOUD, still working on the tune and performance.
The most cost effective means that I know to get a better soundis with a set of Cycle Shack slip on mufflers. As HDK and jblank37 said, the Rinehart's are one of the best sounding but you pay for it.
+1 For cost effective I don't think you can beat the Cycle Shack slip on mufflers. $120, and usually that includes free shipping.
The best advise I could give you. Get out to a local bike night or bike show, anywhere there is likely to be alot of bikes. Look at what guys are running and don't be affraid to ask them to fire it up to see what they sound like. That's the best way to get a true feel for the different sounds and looks.IMO

Go with Pipe Dreamz. Apparently you get a happy ending too.
