This is probably due to user incompetence, but this is my first road bike (1994 HD Sportster 883). The other morning i was on my way to work and my bike just died on me. I was in fifth doing about 55mph and the bike acted as if it lost fuel supply then shut off. I checked fuel supply, filter, etc. and saw nothing out of place (that i know of) and got her cranked back up as if nothing was wrong. I proceeded back down the road and after a few minutes she shut off on me again. Once again, checked my fuel supply, gas was coming through the filter. I managed to limp back home after a few restarts. I let the bike run for about 10-15 mins while i was getting ready for work because i was under the impression that i needed to let the bike warm up but the misses father told me that was a bad thing to do. If anyone could help me with my problem i would appreciate it and any pointers you guys could give me would be welcome as well! Thanks all and good journey!
He's correct on the warm up bit. You shouldn't let it just sit on choke for very long. I only leave mine on choke for a min or 2 at most.
Not sure on the dying thing. odd
The stalling sounds like it might be a vapor lock or plugged fuel tank vent hose. Make sure the fuel line from the tank isn't laying on the motor and make sure the vent hose isn't plugged or kinked.
Hey guys,
thanks for responses. I let the bike sit for 2 days and had time to try it out today. Cranked her up and let her warm up for about a minute then took off down the road. She ran like a top. I guess we can chalk this one up to a vapor lock i'm guessing. Thanks again all and good journey!
mine shuts off around 70 MPH. never did it before. now you gut me thinking about vapor lock becuase its hitting 100 degrees here and is still 95 at night.
i bought oil, filters, spark plugs, and pretty much everything i need to do a tune up to my bike and get it running smoother again.
with the shut off problem, I used to assume it was my float level, or debris blocking the screen filter in the petcock. but vapor lock is a new option i hadn't considered, so ill be checking this out soon.

It's an air cooled motor. Letting it warm up for 15 minutes is notthe greatest idea.

I'm with you. I don't let mine warm up too long without getting some air moving over the cooling fins. I would rather get rolling with the choke engaged to an extent and then lean it out as the motor warms up down the road.
