I've had the front fender off for about 7,000 miles now and haven't got hit with any rocks yet and sand and dirt hasn't bothered me either. The spray from a wet road is another story however. I always carry a bandanna with me and when it rains I wrap it around the fork legs and it does an excellent job of eliminating the water spray in the face. As good a job or better than the short 1200N front fender in fact.
