Looking at buying a 2000 1200c it has pipes ,extra chrome,bags,windshield.15,000 miles the guy wants 5,800 for it.I have always bought new Harleys,this bike has all the stuff I want on it,should I steer clear,is there any known issues with the 2000?I know it has a carb and old style timkin on the output,trans easy to work on if needed,old or new what to do?I know there is some Sportster experts here,give me your opinons please.
Personally, I'd hold out for a 2004+ rubber mount. \\; You might pay a little more, but bargains are to be had all over the place because of the economy. \\; Waiting it out for a 2004+ is worth it in my opinion.
Nothing wrong with a 2000 &\\;\\\\\\; no known issues....Mine's a '00. \\;\\\\\\; KBB lists the retail value at $6100. \\;\\\\\\; You might be able to find a little better deal, but maybe not. \\;\\\\\\; It really depends on how you like the options and color of the bike to determine if it is worth it to you.
Thumper why should he hold out for a o4+? \\; \\; His reasons for liking a 2000 listed in the origanal post are "trans easy to work on", you have to split the cases on the 04+ to do that. \\; Have you owned pre rubbermount sportys to make your post make sense? \\;
 \\;
Fasthoss, sounds like it has some options, "all the stuff you want". \\; If the maintence was done on it, it sounds like a good bike. \\; The biggest difference will be the vibes on solid mount vs 04+ rubbermount. \\; If you have time try riding both, or demo a rubbermount \\;at a dealer. \\; The newer motors have oil squirters to "keep the temps down" but their effect is up in the air, ive seen new motors witht he squirters taken out run the same. \\; The 04+ have plastic oil bags that have exploded, the 2000 is metal and i havnt seen any of those blow up. \\; Dont listen to opinions ffrom people who have owned one bike and have nothing to compare it to. \\; If you own a manual and can do maintenence or fix a minor issue there is no difference. \\; look at the actual differences and see if you want a rubbermount, or newer one with EFI, or a 2000 witha \\; carb and trans trap door.
IF working on the tranny is that important to you, then that is something you won't get on later-model Sportys.
But if you're looking for a good deal....here's an example:
Someone in my town is selling an '04 with QD windsheid, SE slip-ons, Mustang seat, crash bars, forwards, detachable sissy bar and 700 miles for....$5500
 \\;Nothing wrong with the 2000-2003 bikes. I have a 2000 and a 2003 both are good bikes, only real problem I've ever had is both needed the battery cables replaced cause Harleys are cheap. \\; \\; \\;
the price sounds right...the market is funny right now because of the economy...some people are selling really cheap, which is screwing with the value of all our bikes!!! Personally, I don't trust a bike that is more than 2 or 3 years old with less than a 1,000 miles on it. If the owner didn't care about it enough to ride it...do you really think he/she was maintaining it? so I like that the 2000 has 15K miles...that owner LOVED the bike.
