Never had that problem on bikes, but they can be adjusted. That would go to say you need someone who really really knows what they are doing to get that right. I would go replacment route myself.

Are your rear tire and wheel the stock (correct) size? If so, you are SOL other than to replace the ignition module (ICM). There are aftermarket modules, Dyna, Crane, Daytona, etc. that allow the speedo to be calibrated. There is no adjustment with the stock factory ICM.

I would not worry about it. As long as you know it. Think about it. For every 60 miles you ride you are only registering 55 on the odometer. Saves mileage on the bike.

Edit
Oh Crap! Posted too quick I did not think about it. I got it backwards. Yea fix it.

Up to a 5% error in Harleys, and 10% error on metrics is normal.

(I've probably checked 100's of bikes against my ex highway patrol LT1, 9C1 Caprice that has a calibrated and certified accurate speedo).

Just rip the thing off and mount a GPS in it's place. You might even be able to pull in reruns of "I love Lucy".

proper tires, and air pressure can help, but most speedometers on any vehicle are off some

I wonder about the difference between bike speedometer and GPS, because the speedometer on my man's GPS reads lower than both of our speedometers. He says he trusts the GPS more, but that does not make sense to me. I say if you know how far off it is, just operate within that range.
