I know this could have been placed in another thead, but I really want this issue looked at by fellow sportster riders. Have any of you had your tin repainted? I ride an 883 sportster which is currently red right now. I loved the color when I bought it but lately I've been itching to go black. I recently "after the pic was taken" added some chrome, removed my front fender, and threw saddlebags on. The red just doesn't fit with the orange "harley davidson" decal in the middle anymore. I have my mind set on a nice black tin/shiny chrome scheme, it's not the most radical style scheme, but I'm a simple guy.
I know I need to take the fenders and tank into a paint shop, but are there any things I should keep in mind? shades/hues, powdercoating, clearcoating, primers, base coats..
What can I have done to get a reasonably priced, shiny looking black?
Thanks in advance
-Dave

Take your tins to a good paint shop and let them all of the primers, base coats and clearcoating. A simple black paint job will cost well under a grand. good luck and please share pictures when it is done.
Around here, a one color paint job costs about $700 to $800...
That is a base coat/clear coat with about six coats of clear, rubbed and buffed...
Fact is... a real painter would rather and more than likely insist that you do nothing to the tins... A paint job is only as good as the preperation...
My bike use to be red... Now its black but with air brushing done also... it cost me right at $2000.00
Good luck and by the way... look at some of the work they have done... not everyone who claims to be a painter is...
Powdercoat it! The stuff they have now looks better and lasts longer than paint, not to mention, it should only cost maybe $200, and that's if they're rippin you off. My powdercoater has a black chrome coating, from what you've said what you wanted, this may be the route to go.
Just black? Come one now...spiff it up a bit. Seriously...black is my favorite color to paint AND to airbrush on. Everthing else looks so good on black. I've never worked over powdercoat...BUT it is very bulletproof stuff. If you're only going black then it's the way to go. I wouldn't do anything to your stuff before paint\powdercoat. Any good shop will do all that's needed.

you can air brush on powder... i have done it... but a good powder coater can do several colors... i have done black with orange stripes before... here is a wheel that i did in xtreme chrome and high gloss black as well as what you can do if you take your time while taping off for powder...
