Default Doing 5K Service Myself

Planning on doing it myself. Aside from buying the oil filter, oil and necessary gaskets and o-ring, are there any other items which i should buy, like some spare torx head bolts or anything else that can be a nuisance in the middle of a fluid change? Any advice or help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have it pretty well covered. Do you have a foot/lbs and inch/lbs torque wrench for checking fasteners? How about some Dri-Slide for lubing the throttle & clutch cables?

I thought about doing my own too but decided that the $230.00 I paid including syn oil and chrome filter was cheap insurance against any brain damage in the future in case of a warranty issue. Once the warranty is done I'll do all my own work.

Let's see, I do 15K miles per year, that's at least 3 services/year.
  • 3 quarts Mobil-1 20w50 syn = $14.00
  • 1 quart of Mobil-1 75-90 Gear Oil = $9.00
  • 1 HD Chrome Oil Filter = 8.00
Total cost = $31.00
3 x per year, Total annual cost = $93.00

That's one Expensive Warranty you have.

Your right but in my case the first was thrown in and the warranty will be up before the third so it's was just the one. (short riding season here you know)

I was also thinking of doing my own servicing. I have a 2007 Nightster and was wondering if I should buy a service manual. I rather not and spend the money on something else like gas but I have little experience with servicing my bike.

Where does the gear oil pour into? An Amsoil dealer quoted me a what they would charge for the filter and oil but I don't remember that it came with gear oil. If I where to do my own servicing should I buy the gear oil separate from the package deal that the Amsoil dealer was selling.

Where does the gear oil drain from?

Sounds like you got it covered. But buy some extra torx head bolts for the derby cover. I've stripped out 2 of them and had to drill the out because they're made cheap. Other than that, theres not much to the 5K service.

Yeah, but you know which end of a screwdriver to hold

(I'm the guy that pulls into a dealer with oil pouring out of the bike because some idiot over tightened the primary's drain plug and cracked the O-ring... I ain't gonna point fingers, but the idiots initials were Bacon Grease...)
