40+ mpg in town for an EFI Sportster is NORMAL. Carbs generally get better mileage, especially if they're tuned right. State of tune, riding condition, and riding habits are what affects MPG.

Try doing what me and faber do and see how your mpg compares to that of normal, just for kicks.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply! I am going to try shifting at the high end of the RPM range and see what happens. I will post the results in a few weeks. Anyone have any increase in mileage after doing upgrades to exhaust system ?

Appreciate the help!

wow. big differences here. My 2009 XL1200N gets 46 MPG on the HWy averaging 70+ MPH, and city 38. when my light comes on, I still have almost a full gallon in there, is that normal?

2009 1200C, I get about 45 on average around town/highway mixed more on the highway, less around town. Your bike is fine.

From what I've heard, you should see an increase in mpg as the bike gets worn in.

Generally, it appears that exhaust mods tend to reduce fuel economy on the EFI Sportsters, but not always. Seems like it's a crap shoot. If you want optimum fuel economy, keep it stock. Just my non-mechanical opinion. I have Screaming Eagle Street Performance slip on mufflers as the ONLY "performance-related" modification from stock. Unless you count synthetic oil, and that just makes it run cooler.

Changing up the exhaust/intake/mapping is very expensive and even if you did see a slight increase in fuel economy, it would take you a LOOOONG time to recoup your losses from doing the mods in the first place.

My advice is to keep it stock, but twist the throttle occasionally, because both you and your Sporty will be happy! 1st gear, keep it under 35 before shifting into 2d. 2d gear keep it somewhere under 65 mph before going to 3d! I have no idea where the rev limiter is for 3rd, 4th or 5th. Make sure the engine is at full operational temperature when you do this, though....

I get 50-52 mpg highway (70-75 mph). Dunno around town, I do very little city type driving.

I just bought my 2008 XL1200C about a month ago. I've got about 500 miles on it, and the fuel light comes on at about 126-130 miles. The fuel light is supposed to come on with a gallon left in the tank, but when I fill up, I am only putting in an average of 3.0 gallons. I was going to have the dealer look at it when I take it in for the 1000 mile service, but I don't think there is much they can do to get it to be more accurate.
It's the first bike I've owned that has actually had a fuel light, and the light is actually kind of annoying.
I'm averaging 47mpg (30% city riding, 70% highway riding).

This sounds exactly what mine has been doing 120-130 miles the fuel light comes on and I fill up with 3.0 gallons. Look for the gas mileage to improve again around 1000 miles.
