My 2005 XL1200C started idleing bad at stop signs and dying. Then it started to snub itself out when taking off. I took the air cleaner off and it seems to be back firing from the carb. Someone told Me it was runnin to rich. I tryed adjusting the mixture, but backed out the valve to far. now i have a needle valve a spring, washer and o-ring cannot find the order the go back togather in the book. And does it sound like its runnin to rich? Any help would be great. thanks
I'm not certain about where the o-ring and washer go, the spring obviously goes under the screw. Strictly a GUESS, I would put spring-washer-oring over the screw. Put it back in and see if it leaks. Backing the mixture screw out makes it richer. Seat it gently and then back it out 2 to 2-1/2 turns and work from there. Check nightrider.com for more tips and help. It tells how to adjust the idle mix.
The symptoms you describe could be other causes besides mixure. You need to start a process of elimination. Check vacuum lines too.
^ like he said, you should never have messed with the carb, the likleyhood of a carb just suddenly starting to run rich for no reason is very low, usually it's bad plugs, dirt in the carb, vacumme leak or other such things, very seldom does a carb just go out of adjustment by it's self.
Once ya get your carb straight if its running the same way run the diag. mode on your speedo to see what error codes it posts. Typical problem besides the aforementioned plugs, vacuum leak etc. would be the carnk position sensor going bad which will cause the bike to suddenly run erratic.
Actually there is a really good reason to mess with the carb. I'm familiar with Wisconsin weather enough to know it can get pretty warm there in the summer, and of course COLD in the winter.
I re-tune my carb with the change of every season. Cold air and Hot air don't react at all the same when it comes to the air\fuel mixture. Right now, mine is still in summer tune, but it has turned fall here. My bike stopped while at a stop sign yesterday. Just need to adjust the air\fuel mixture, but haven't taken the time yet.
That may not be your problem, but certainly could be. This link is helpful for carb tuning:
when at a stop it is flooding its self with too much fuel.
sucking it in at the vacume line on petcock
remove line at valve and put a vac tester on it should read 7-10 lbs
diafram in valve is bad

this sounds legit,
i would replace with the old style, no vacuum system, just straight through, and remember to turn it off when your bikes not on.
