My 2006 Sportster is fast, but the newer big twins with 96 inches and some decent mods will smoke me.

The few buddies have ran against I tore up off the line to around 40 - 55 mph, but they start catching. By 65 - 80 mph, they have me. That extra 22 cubic inches seems to do the trick, plus the rubber mounted Sportsters are heavier than the older Sporties, so you loose some weight/HP ratio.

My roommate as an 00 Softail w/ a 95" kit. It'll bust it loose in 4th, and when he can get traction...its no contest.

It also could have been an "Experienced vs Non-experienced Rider" issue.

I am an experience rider, just didn't expect him to take off like he did...till I really got on the throttle, I was already in 2nd gear...I still think I should have been able to catch him though...like I said, my sporty is far from stock. It was embarrassing...there was a guy in a car behind me who caught up at the next light, he sat next to me laughing out loud...all I could do was shake my head in shame.

Ouch. That hurts. I'm not sure that I would have shared that with anyone
