Looks like I'm going to have to replace my starter for the third time. Fortunatly Harley covers parts for 1 year. My sportie is 2 years old and I do ride a lot (75,000 kms.), but I would expect to get more out of a starter.
You definitely have an issue running through 3 starters in 2 years. What do they say the issues have been? Solenoids? Bendix(s)? Are they aligning it right?
What is failing on the starter? Is the starter motor going bad or is it the (plastic) starter clutch gear that's stripping? Is the bike a 1200 or 883? Some 1200's are known to strip the starter gear due to engine kick back during a restart when the motor is hot.
Mine use to do it frequently when the engine was hot and I shut it off for a short time, then tried to restart. Mine would often kick back against the starter when it happened and it wound up taking out the starter clutch gear. It's a common issue on 1200's because of the higher compression.
I finally solved the problem when I installed the Daytona Twin-Tec Ignition module. It can be programmed to wait 1 or 2 engine revolutions before it fires the first spark. I've never had a hot start problem again.
Its the starter drive (clutch). My XL1200 does have the "kick back" syndrome. It happens more often when the engine is cold, than hot. You would think that Harley would fix the problem properly. Instead they just keep replacing the starter. It takes about 2 hrs. to re & re the starter.
