Default Tool Kits

I'm extending my range of travel and I'd like to know if there is a must have list of tools to carry along on my trips. I carry the usual of SAE sockets, combination wrenches, screwdrivers, etc. I don't want to carry much weight, but I want to carry the right things when I go. Any experience, suggestions, etc.?

Thanks,
Chris

A few plastic strap-ties are always a good idea.

Check this out. I made one and carry it always. Haven't used it yet, but I'm glad to know it's there just in case.

Cell phone and HOG card. Or if you aren't a member, your insurance company should have roadside assistance. There's also AAA. But yeah...think about what COULD go wrong that you can actually fix on the side of the road, and go from there. Extra fuses, zip ties, and electrical or duct tape comes to mind. I have a Windzone HD kit with a few precious additions like an actual usable socket wrench! Small flashlight could come in handy, too, knife, multi tool...

I also carry a slime compact air compressor, but the above homemade job is better because it's got a REAL motor, and cools MUCH better. The homemade one above is also a little smaller than mine.

A small multimeter is very useful and a bit of wire. I don't go anywhere without a visegrip or "molegrips" as they refer to them in Great Britain.

You NEED to carry spare fuses and a spare relay, spare battery for your fob also, along with a few misc.tools in case something comes loose, you won't be doing a rebuild beside the road.

Just use the search function of this site and you'll find numerous threads on the subject, and you'll also find everyone is different in what they carry. Some people are simplistic and some go way overboard. I for one only carry the nessecities......Cell phone, extra pack of smokes, multi-tool, a couple condoms, an extra fender seat nut & c-clip, and a couple zip ties as they can be used either for the bike or on the GF, (but that depends on her mood).

It's most likely that if something breaks, you aren't going to have that specific part or the specific tools to fix it with you, nor will people, (cars or motorcyclists), stop to help, even if they had the tools/parts/etc. Just my $0.02 worth.

You are right about not having the part you need, but having a few misc wrenches, multipurpose screwdriver (which will handle the smaller hex and torx bits) is if nothing else, a little piece of mind. Air compressor might be nice, but not with laced wheels, (unless you have a Beemer) as you probably won't be able to fix a puncture on your tire anyway. And BTW, I stop for any bike on the side of the road whether I am on a bike or in my truck. To me that is common courtesy. Heck I will even stop for a cage that looks like they need help

I've been rideing for about 27 years and only needed a tool kit once, on my Triumph. The float bowl would get water in it from a bad gasket that I was too lazy to fix. Never needed tools on any other scooter I've ever been on. I do however carry tools because you never know. I have a set of met/sae sockets, multi screw driver,met/sae allens and torks and a flat repair kit with a 12volt pump. The whole shmear only takes up about 1/2 of a bag, so, on a sportster, you might loose a whole bag but you get piece of mind.
