I really think its a matter of what you want to do with the bike. The gearing on the 883 is slightly different than the 1200. I can keep up with a 1200 on my 883, until we get above 55+, and thats where the 1200 shines. Has much more in the upper end.....but I don't go much faster than 65 or 70 so it makes no difference to me.
The 883 to 1200 conversion can be done, and there is a difference...I believe ~55HP to ~70 HP, but the gearing does not change. So you will still be reving high @ 70mph, you will just get there quicker
If the 883 primary is not changed that 883 conversion to 1200 or 1250 will be screaming at 80mph. I have the 1200R with the 883 counter and at 80mph that thing is hugging 4,000rpm. If I were to use the 883 primary it would be over the top.
Well here is the thing. Running around 4,000 miles any time you hit the highway isn't good for the engine I don't care what it is. So for 1900 I would have a screamin bike but still have to spend another 250 or so to change primaries. It just gets damn frustrating. I ride 40 highway miles at least daily. I want that engine pulling around 3000. On my 883,and I don't have a tach, I'm guessing I'm running around 3600 rpm. So if I can lower that 600 or so cheaply then someone let me know. I really don't want to race but when I ride to work I use every advantage that a motorcycle gives me and I need more freeway power. Coming from a crotch rocket it is really becoming a nuisance.
I ride hard and by god I can cover 20 miles of Fort Worth traffic in less than 12 minutes. But again must get more freeway power. I want to be at 70 think about 80 and be there, just like that.
Change the rear belt sprocket.........I believe you have 68 teeth now, go down to 65 teeth and you should loose around 500 rpm in high gear.... kinda like turning your 5th gear into an over drive.......you do sacrafice some lower end power but you will achieve the lower rpm while doing higher speeds that you are looking for............
Put my sporty to the test today, took it to the interstate, all stock 883 gears, 70 mph= 3500 rpm, it all depends on how you ride the bike, I mostly run around town and cruise, i don't do much hi-way riding.I was told when i had this bike built it probably wound'nt run much over 125, and i said fine, that's 50 mph faster than i'll be riding.
