Default 1200s most economical stage 1 mods

So I have a 99' xl1200s sport with SE slip-ons and jetted for the pipes.

She runs great, a little lean when its cold out ( a little popping when I let off the throttle at cruising speed). I absolutely love how snappy it is, but after reading about the potential this bike has I wonder about the stage 1 mod.
The guy I bought it from says not to mess with it cuz she runs so damn nice. Am I playing with fire buying a bigger flow airbox, which airbox is the most bang for my buck.

Any advice would be appreciated, I did search on here, couldn't find much related to the 1200s.

Your not getting into anything that everyone on this board has not already done. The common breather, and the one I would get in your case is just the standard SE breather. You may have to rejet the carb once installed, but that is no big deal, because jets are cheap, and there are some damn good right ups on here for it. Don't listen to that guy, its your bike now, have fun with it. And 1200s is just the model type, the motor/parts related to it wont be any different from any other 1200.

Might even make it run better. lol

If you put an enricher screw in the carb you can adjust you'll fuel mixture for the seasons.....Oh but then you'd be modding the bike.

you have a little hotter cams and 10:1 compression compared to 9:1 - you have pipes - add the AC - get the carb dialed in. add octane booster to premiuim to get the most out of your 10:1 - i noticed a huge difference in ambient temps above 75 degress (which is almost all the time for me) - it would pull hard from 2000rpm instead of pinging and where it wasn't quite pinging but seemed like it was struggling before it pulls noticeable harder. i am going to try avgas (aviation fuel) which has higher octane - i just haven't been out to the hangar with an empty tank yet - don't know if you have that available but i will let you know what it does.
