Hey guys my name is john. I just got a new used harley about 3 months ago. When i ride, i keep hearing this knocking sound (coming from the top end) when my bike is running. I was wondering if anyone has this problem. I think that it might be the rocker but i am not sure. It gets really loud about mid to higher rpm range. I have a 1997 883 hugger. any help would be great. Thanks a ton.
John
I am currently in school and doing adjustments on 4 stroke engines. but for some reason, i dont know where to adjust the rocker on this thing at. is it even an adjustment that can be made. Im looking through my clymer and cannot find them in there anywhere.
Sportster engines have always had some knocking noises coming from the top end, which has been refered to as a sewing machine sound. If it's excessive knocking when you roll on the throttle, it could be a number of things. What grade of gas are you using? Is the oil level OK? The carb could need tuning. You could be rolling on the throttle at too low of RPM.
im using 93 octane and i just cleaned out the carb when i got my bike. I replaced my plugs and wires and air filter. I checked the oil and it is ok. i hear this when i do roll on the throttle but its kinda hard to say if it is a "normal" noise. it sounds like there is something banging on something else. I thought that my horn was hitting the frame but it still does it when after i removed it. it sounds like something is hitting metal in there.

There is no adjustment, the motor has hydrolic lifters. If what you are hearing is more of a clattering sound and you hear it while running at a steady speed in the mid rpm range, it's probably just normal top end lifter noise. If it's mainly audible when you are cranking on WOT, then you may have a detonation problem.
Next time the noise comes on try pressing the gas tank down.....I had a similar noise, the rear fixing bolt was loose, and I placed a bit of rubber between the tank and frame.....just a thought.
