i bought a 2008 883 sportster in dec. i'm comming from a honda so perhaps harleys are different. when i crank the accelerator it's slow to rev up and back down. is this characteristic of harley's v. honda's or is something not right-its just not as responsive as i'm used to. miles
You bought a mini-bike what the heck do you expect? It's a tiny motor so it's gonna suck. Sorry but you should have at the least bought a 1200...the good thing for you is they have the trade up program where you get your money back if you upgrade...
Check to see if the throttle lock is too tight. Its a star looking plastic wheel under your throttle grip. If its tight it will drag on the throttle up and down. I keep mine loose.
My old 883 was awesome and smoked a lot of other Harleys, but it did have the screaming eagle package, etc.
I'd guess you probably just chose too small of an engine with to heavy of a bike than what you are used to. The Harley's are heavier, so an 883 will not be what it was to you on a Honda.

this is one of the stupidest things ive heard on this forum
oh by the way, its the engine design. harley engines have a very long stroke and if you try to rev them quickly they will not respond as fast as a 4 cylinder or paralell twin.
it doesnt mean anything is wrong with the motor, its just a different design than the other bikes you rode.
get it tuned with a stage 1 and it will become a bit quicker revving up and down (becuase it wont be running lean) but it still will NEVER rev as quickly up or down as a CBR or even a honda rebel.
my ducati is the same way as my harley, more proof is the engine design

In general, no, But it depends on what Honda your comparing to your Sporty. As mentioned by SpursDarkrider, check that out, sounds like you have a sticky throtle.

A stage one upgrade (hi-flow air filter and exhaust system, efi re-map)makes a BIG difference over stock. Last I checked, a 1200cc kit can be installed by your dealer for about $900. Then you can really take advantage of the strengths of your engine's design--gobs of low and mid-range power that makes revving unnecessary.
