Intresting topic. I was just in Texas(no helmet law) visitig family and my nephew rides with a paint ball mask to protect from bugs-n-such. I thought it was a cool idea then I got thinking, why not use one with a half helmet here in upstate NY(or anywhere else that has a helmet law).Though I hav'nt tried it with a helmet(yet) it seems like it would work.It gives a good feild of view, fits tight to face, full jaw coverage and up to hairline, has interchangable lenses(amber, smoked, clear),it's small and light and will easily fit into a saddlebag or backpack. The only downdide I could see was it did not have vents at the mouth\nose(his did'nt anyway) but,he says it does'nt fog up on him..It's not going to give great protection in a crash but,to deflect wind, bugs and stones. It just might be the ticket for the half helmet user....Oh yeah, they have some cool colors and graphics too.
Clearly, helmet choice is a choice - it's individual and no one should have a say other than the rider. period.
"But, I just don't understand the mentality that riding a CBR compared to an HD cruiser dictates helmet style and proposed safety. I mean, sure, you might rip around far more aggressively on a sport bike than you do on a Deluxe"
I wonder if there are any studies that statistically prove there are less injury based on class of motorcycle.
enough said.....i was much more of a aggresive rider on my sport bike than my HD. Always racing my buddies down the street, wheelies, ect... now on my deluxe thats a different story. Slow and low, maybe watch the grass grow...who knows. Now im older and not much interested in all that. i just like to cruise with a half shell. If you have ever had a sport bike you may ride it alot different than a HD...I did..Its like having a Ferrari (meant for speed and corners) compared to a Caddilac (meant to cruise). But this was just IMO
There are several studies that say that crotch rockets are far more dangerous than cruisers. You combine speed with youth and you get crashes. Just google "Most Dangerous Motorcycles".
I agree blknchrme, I've covered miles on a CBR600 and for sure - the lines in the road zip by much faster than they do on my Harley.... not much fun going the speed limit when you stare at tachometer that goes into the teens!
A Harley gives you that soothing feeling going down the road. No need to be blowing by people on a Harley cruiser. Just cruise and be cool and enjoy the ride.
What happened to the traditional 3/4 --did we forget a fraction
Temps below 35degrees - FULL FACE otherwise 3/4"
If I'm riding local and its HOT I'll put on the half
99.99% of the time I ride in a novelty helmet in a state that requires a DOT helmet......I have a FF, but I've only worn it a handful of times: once on the ride home from the dealership for the wife's sake, and the second was because I had a 7+ hour ride home from Abingdon, VA in 30* to 40* temps with rain the whole way home, and on days 30* days to work....35*+ days and it's the novelty helmet.

half helmet with the windshield and full face without.. something about taking that windshield off really puts the SPORT in sportster for me... i like to hear my bike sing every now and then so ill let it rip to about 70mph in 3rd.. no windshield and 70+mph and half helmet is not much fun and bugs turn into bullets at that speed
