Okay, am gonna upload some pictures and try to show y'all what I'm seein' as I can't see how that guard's gonna go on there...
I took the horn loose. There's no way to screw the horn into the guard tab so that it'll go through to the back... the screw on the back of the horn is relatively tiny and short. Also, am I supposed to attach the guard to that relatively flimsy piece that HD said to drill a new hole into to move the horn for the voltage regulator? Is that going to be strong enough? And the picture of the 4 large bolts... are those the ones I'm supposed to choose from (depending on how the upper part seats) to attach the guard to the sides of the bike? Am I clear as mud??? (Am confusing myself but, am hoping you guys know what I'm trying to say.)
By the way, I didn't bust my knuckles getting the horn off--YAY!
And I didn't pay attention when I went out to the carport to work on the guard, but from the pictures, I'm thinking there might be more than mud on my bike! I *really* need to spend some time cleaning it... I know, I know.
Oops. Forgot the picture of the 4 large bolts. I think if I can figure out how to get the top tab onto the bike, the sides will fall into place... so to speak. Sigh...
ok you see those 2 bolts that hold the bracket where the horn screws in? thats what you take loose to attach the top of the guard to. you take those out then you place the top guard tab up against it and line up the holes to each other and reattach the 2 bolts. Be sure and use blue locktite on the bolt threads. let me study the bottom bolts, can you take a couple of better pics of the bottom at slightly different angles to get a closer clearer look?
If you look at the attached picture, it appears my bike isn't built for that guard... is it?? My bike is an 03 Sportster XLH883. I did find where you said I should put the top of the guard. So, does this mean that I DO need the black adapter?? I don't have one and have been hard-pressed to find one! There's a used one on ebay that looks pretty rough, but if I need one, it may come to that...
I hope I'm not just being dense or having a brain cramp or "senior moment"!!
Is that last pic the bottom brace on the bottom of the fork tubes? I see a hole there for a bolt. Was there a bolt there? Does the black bracket on the bottom of your engine guard have a bolt hole? if it does then that bracket matches up with the bracket on the bottom of your guard. see how many bolts came with your guard and see if you have one that fits into the bracket hole in the bike. See if the bolt hole is threaded and if one of your bolts screw in.
Yes, that's on the fork tubes directly under the voltage regulator. No, there's never been a bolt in there. I don't have the black bracket. I have to find one. I have to give up for today as I've got company coming for the week. Maybe I can get back to it on Wednesday. I'll take the guard with me and see if I can find a HD dealer so I can get that black piece. Will keep you posted. Thanks again for all the help.
i see your in va, in the next county by winchester, go over to the Dealership there and they will help you out. MY GF is from winchester and her dad has a sporty and told me the dealership there is pretty good.
Hi All - new to riding and especially to the forum! I just got my first bike which is a 00 883 XLH Custom and trying to find an Engine Guard for it. I cannot, for the life of me, find one that fits the XLH. So please don't laugh when I ask...what is so different about the XLH and where on earth can I find a bar for my bike? Any help is greatly appeciated! The internet has not been helpful...and its most likely me not knowing enough yet. Thanks in advance!

I'm pretty sure I still have the engine guard that I was trying to put on my Sport 883 XLH. Am in Warrenton, VA.
Around the time I was writing and trying to put the guard on my bike, I was diagnosed with cancer and all hell broke loose. After surgery, chemo, etc., I survived. Sold my beloved bike though so someone else could enjoy while I couldn't. So, I still have the engine guard and wouldn't mind selling it for what I gave for it, if you want it.
