Well, as some of you may have read in the Iron 883 thread, I just bought the wife the Iron, but before we take delivery, it is getting the 1200. They are remapping it as well. I just ordered the Hooker rebel pipes. Do you guys think the remap they are going to do at HD will be enough to compensate for the pipes????
If you don't mind me askin...what are they charging you to do the conversion at the dealership? I'm thinking of getting it for my 883L. If HD does it, do you get a good warranty on it?
1. I will be installing the pipes, unless they get here before we take delivery.
2. They are getting me for around 1500 for the conversion, 1200 of that is parts
3. I believe it will have the Stage 1 aircleaner on it
4. She likes the all black motor, instead of the grey on the Nightster. She liked the option of the black denim paint with no stripes. By all accounts I have heard, the 1200 conversion is slightly "hotter" than the factory 1200. Plus, she wants to ride, she is already looking at parts.....I am not going to argue with her about what she wants, I am just glad she wants to ride. Besides, the cost of an Iron with the conversion isn't much different that the cost of the Nightster.
It's not cheaper anymore to buy an 883 and convert it to a 1200 if you do it the right way, the SERT and the dyno tune cost over a grand by itself, and if you don't do that then you might as well leave it an 883.
If you want a 1200 then buy a Nightster, you will be ahead in every way.
She doesnt like the look of the nightster. She likes the look of the Iron. Its their money, they can obviously afford the conversion and the cost that goes with it. Later they can trade it in for a crossbones or some other BT.
The remap will only be ok if the air cleaner is stock...and even then, I would not necessarily trust it. The gearing on the 883 is different, the heads are different, and probably some other things. I would work them hard for a deal on the dyno tune.
BTW, I agree with your wife. The Iron just looks better than the Nightster...and I love the Nightster and miss mine. But, if I end up buying another Sporty, it will be the Iron and I too, will build the motor.
Tell your dealer you are adding the pipes and have it mapped for that set up. The pipes are an easy install but it won't run right if not mapped for the pipes.
