Default Help!

Hello everyone. I hope I'm posting in the right section. I've got a friend with an 2004 Roadster and his bike is acting up. He broke down the other night and I picked him up. The bike had died on him on the highway. I looked into the tank and it had no fuel. So we get it to my house and put gas in it. Now, whenever you turn the key on and hit the run switch everything is ok. When you hit the start button, it cuts out and everything goes dark. If you turn the key off and back on nothing happens it stays dark and dead. In fact if you let it set for a few minutes, the speedo needle will start twitching and making a faint sound. So I pulled the main fuse, and it stopped. The battery is pretty new, and hooking up a charger to it did not help at all. I checked all the fuses and put dielectric grease on them. The spark plugs were fouled so I replaced them. Still no help. The plug wires look okay. Could he have a problem with his coil, stator, or maybe his voltage regulator? Has anyone had this happen to them? He has a service manual that he's reading, but it doesn't seem to cover this particular issue. Any help would be appreciated. And of course I do apologize for this long post.

First thing I would do is make sure the batt connections are good and tight. They can be decieving, and have been known to cause all kinds of troubles. If you say the battery is fairly new, I would be willing to be that one of the connections is loose, particularly the ground, because it is hard to get to.

Did you try charging the battery with a battery charger or battery tender? There's a difference between the two, and a tender will not totally revive a completely dead battery even after being left on the tender for several days. It sounds as if your buddy ran it out of gas and killed the battery by continually try to re-fire the bike. If you used a tender, try a charger or try a new battery, (borrow the one from another bike). Or yes, a loose battery connection at the battery or frame/starter or a loose 90* connection at the coil would cause the lack of starting & the speedo needle to jump, but I've only seen the needle jumping as I've been riding down the road with the entire speedo & engine losing power. Did you guys do any other electrical work to the bike lately, (internally wire new bars, move signals/speedo/etc) that could have chafed/rubbed through or been pinched causing a short?

We haven't done any other electrical work to it, and we did use a battery charger. The connections are all tight. I called the dealer to price a starter relay, and they said 10 bucks. So we're gonna try that. And will post the results if any. Thanks for the replies.
