there basically the same, if its 5 speed belt drive your never gunna be quick enough to matter, and if its the rubbermount then it weighs so much your better off not worrying about power.
buy it for the looks becuase its never going to get you anywhere quick enough to bother thinking about 900 vs 1200
Sorry Don't Agree, with a 1250 Big Bore, Head Work, and the Right Cams can double the HP of a Stock 883
means nothing if it weighs 600 pounds, like putting a tortoise on a skateboard....
A 100hp Sporty ie, 1250cc, stage II heads, 536 cams and SuperTrapp exhaust should be alot of fun on the streets and may be just a hair faster than a 883

you arent going to get a 1200 and wish you got a 883...can't say the same the other way around, there is no replacement for displacement. i like bigger jugs so naturally i like the 1200 better. if you looked for used the price difference isn't that much - at a dealer of course it is a more fixed price difference. look for a 1200 and if you run across an 883 that you can't pass up then get that.
I rode both a few years ago when I was thinking of buying a Sporty. The 883 engine felt more flexible around traffic but I would have bought the 1200 because the extra torque made it more fun to ride. Also, the engine felt more relaxed at 65 mph which is the speed I spend most time riding at.
How about a 883/1200 conversion vs a stock 1200? If the price is right on a convert then is it worth going with it or is it 1200 all the way?
Excellent question but also opening a can of worms... tech wise a stock 1200 is more powerful than an upgrade unless do more than just the Big Bore ... But if find a good conversion like I did on on the 01 he did Heads, Cams and Sprocket adjustments as well .. Otherwise would recommend going with a stock 1200 and regardless what a couple posted my 1200 will blow the doors off a stock 883...
I got the 883 due to budget. I am not dissapointed. I did put on pipes, PCIII tuner and SE Intake kit. Plenty of juice to keep up with the pack, even 2 up. That being said, if I had the cash, I likely would not even have gotten a sportie, I was really lookin for a dyna wide or softail. You did say this will be your first bike, will it be your last? Always room for improvement once the budget allows. I have even done 200 mile trips no problem (except that speeding ticket 93 in a 70, he wrote me for 83, lukily my lawyer got it reduced to excessive noise)
