Default Lights Out When Trying to Start

Came home from a ride today and tried to start the bike after opening the garage door. The engine kicked over slightly then stopped and all the lights went out. The bike was completely dead. Reseated the maxi-fuse and the lights and power came back on. Tried to start, same thing. Slight turnover then nothing. Did this several times with the same result. Finally, put the bike in gear and pushed it a little to change the position of the crank. Reseated the maxi-fuse and lights on, bike started with no problem. Turned it off and started it a few more times and no issue. So, what's up? Could the crank have been sitting at just the right place where the compression overloaded the starter (apparently there's a circuit breaker of some kind in or before the starter). For reference this is an '05 with the SE 1200 kit with 10:1 compression pistons. This kit has been in the bike since '06 and I've never seen this before. Any ideas?

It might be possible that your position sensor is going bad.

The exact same thing happened to my kid's 1200 last week, it was a bad connection at the battery. Got it started and it worked for a bit, but did it again later. Cleaned the battery connections and been fine since.

Default Battery Cables

Could be a loose cable at the battery but if it isn't that, then check the cables closely.

For some reason, the early rubber mouns tended to tear up the starter end of the positive cable and the transmission end of the ground cable. Even if they look good, check them closely because the conductors can be damaged on the inside of the insulation.

Good luck.

Yep, clean the battery terminals and the connectors on the wires, coat them with No-Ox or high dialectric grease. Problem gone.
