I have no experience with the sportsers, but from what I saw on the Ultra conversion, the auto adjuster is ratcheted like an automatic brake adjuster and cannot slip back unless, maybe, when put under abnormally heavy load, as in jamming it into a couple of gears too low and dumping the clutch from high speeds. Even if the adjuster were to slacken off in this case, the next acceleration would re-adjust it again.
Is there a difference between the sportster auto adjuster and the twin cam 88 adjusters or am I missing some basic point here. (I'm a bit new to all of this and might have.)
I just had a look at pictures of the sportster auto adjuster and it looks like there is no ratchet mechanism to keep the tension on it during deceleration.
In this case, I would definitely go back to a manual adjuster as this will give more consistent chain tension during deceleration and acceleration.
I did see a hydraulic auto adjuster on these forums somewhere that might do a better job than either of the ones you have tried to date. The last thing you want is a chain flopping about in your chain case and wearing bits off it.
