Good afternoon all. I am planning on picking up my used 2009 XL883L today! I am thinking about changing the grips and wondered if any of you changed your grips and which ones you selected. I also plan on adding the motherwell luggage rack and the jardine crash bars.
I went to my local dealership and tried every different grip they had installed on a bike. I then found my favorite then second favorite from there based on feel first and then looks.
I chose the chrome and rubber large grips as they had the best feel for me and I liked the look. However everyones preference will be a bit different.
How hard is it to change out the grips? I was looking at them today. I think I would like something a bit bigger.
Its actually a very simple process. You just need to have the correct torx bits. The left one is glued on so you might have to slip a pick inside to break it free, once you get the control half open.
The right one you will have to loosen the throttle cables, have a small pair of pliers to grab the cable int he ferule. The manual has great pics adn is pretty clear.
Do a search here for throttle cable adjustment as there were some points that clarified some things the manual states and will make it easier.
After switching mine several times I have it down to taking about 30 minutes.
I use the Avon Contour grips. They have a good texture, and all rubber in the center. I can imagine grabbing a billet grip with no gloves after a long day of the bike sitting in the sun. Probably not too fun.
i might suggest the nastagic grips. very comfy, not to big, not to small. i would highly recommend a factory service manual if you dont already have one. it was not mentioned, grips a fairly easy task, but can be expensive if improperly done, like breaking the brake light switch. the brass ferules will disappear if your not careful. my 09, the left grip was not glued, just secured in the switch housing. good luck
