Default engine break-in

Hi:

A quick question from a new Sporsters rider. (1200 custom purchased last Tuesday, more details on me in the new members forum). I have done a few searches in the tech. section as well as here, but have not found an answer to this (maybe stupid) question.

I have about 200 miles on the bike since I bought it last Tuesday, so I am breaking it in. Here in Maine, that means I am have been riding in temps in the 40s and 50s. I would also like to commute with the bike, which means early morning temps in the 20s for a 10 mile ride this coming week. Should I be concerned about this w.r.t. break-in? My intuition tells me that the relatively low oil temps should be a good thing, but if anybody has any input, I would appreciate it.

(I did ask the head tech. at the dealer about running 20W-50 with temps in the 20s, and he said that it would be fine, but I did not ask specifically about break in.)

You'll probably get a range of answers, but since I live in Montana and I am now riding to work in the 20°s and riding home in the 40°s.......

Let the bike warm up good. Let it idle for 5 minutes, at least. It should run fine then. Break in or any time.

Welcome and congrats on the new ride!

Make sure you ride real slow until the engine is warmed up, I only work 3 miles from my house and when I get to work my bike is still pegging the oil pressure gauge with any kind of RPM's when it's anything under 40 degrees.

I would think the lower temps would be benificial to breaking in the bike. Just make sure it's warmed up good before riding.
