I am hoping that someone can alleviate my concerns regarding my 06 883L. I currently have only 196 miles on the bike and it rides wonderfully. It shifts gears smoothly and doesn't seem to slip at all. It has that nice clunk when I shift, but I've also been hearing a second quieter clunk as I release the clutch (generally only in first). I asked the harley service guy about this and he said it's just the sound of the clutch catching the gears and is fine. Last night as I was riding (about 12 miles into my ride) the second clunk was more audible and affected the higher gears as well. However, not every time I shifted. It didn't seem to affect the shifting of the gears at all and I noticed no other issues other than the noise. Harley service thinks that it is just the bike breaking in. I am hoping that this is the case. I am not up to the skill level yet to ride it to the dealership as I am a very new rider. The nice lady at the service department said that tranny issues with the sportster are few and far between, so I am really hoping this is just the sound of the bike breaking in. advice would be appreciated as I would like to ride as much as possible this weekend.
I have the same problem with mine but not as bad. When I switch from neutral to 1st at a full stop, it makes a loud clunk noise. Never had the clunk happen while driving, just while at a stop. Anyone else had this problem?
Yep I clunk in every gear as I press the peg down or up. Thats the shift taking place. the second "clunk" your talking aobut is probably the slack in the syncros being takin up. I hear this if I shift and then get off the throttle. I wouldnt worry about those clunks. You have to remember that your tranny is just 5 feet of bare air from your ears. You can hear alot of what these things do that you would never hear in a cage.
Thanks very much for the responses. I am having the dealer take a peak at this. They are picking the bike up this morning. I know it sounds very lame, but I am a new rider and not quite up to the skill level to ride to their dealership just yet. I'll let you know what they say.
Tranny troubles on a sporty are far and few between. But in case you need tranny repair, anything after 04 is a big deal. When they went to rubber mounted engines they no longer used the trap door in the tranny. Any tranny repairs require pulling the engine and splitting the cases to get to the gears. Make sure you keep the primary lube at proper level, this is also your tranny lube.
