Default Oil Temps ?

I picked up an oil temp guage for my 06 Custom yesterday. After a one hour ride in to work this am, 80 degrees, my temp is around 185. Just curious what others might be seeing on their guages if you have one. I am sure it'll range higher and lower with the outside temps.

In the texas weather (in the morning or evening in the mid to high 80's, in the daytime 97), mine has been anywhere from about 195 to 205. It generally seems to average around 200.

I should add that all of my riding is local traffic. No highways, so I imagine my temp will be on the higher side. I'm also in the breakin period, so I'm not running at high RPM's.

I think alot has to do with a few things, how your bike is tuned, how much traffic you sit in, what oil you run and the way it's ridden. I mostly ride shorter distances, have synthetic oil and don't sit in much traffic and my temp gauge hardly ever gets over 160 but most of my riding is in the am and pm at mid to low 70's so far.

This may sound like a dumb question but do you cover the oil temp dipstick when you wash the bike or is it ok to spray the water on it when rinsing off the soap. I was thinking that if the seal in it is not real good that the water and soap would get into the gauge part and mess it up.

I've never had a temperature gauge on any Harley that I have owned, so I don't have a clue as to the oil temperature on any of them (Pan's, Shovel's, BT EVO's, or my 1200C EVO)

I just run good 20W-50 synthetic oil in the engines (along with the extended length filters), and change fluids and filters every 2,500 - 3,000 miles.

Live out in a very rural area, no city traffic jams or stop & go traffic, but even so, I don't let an air cooled engine sit and idle at a stop (without any airflow) any longer than necessary.

The bikes all ran great, didn't burn excessive oil, and showed no signs of excessive heat, so that's all that matters to me.

If I had a temperature gauge mounted that would (to me) just be something else to check constantly and question.

I've got more important things to worry about.

Of course this is just my personal opinion, and opinions do vary.

I'd be afraid to see what my oil temp is after an hour and a half stuck in Houston traffic. Hell, my legs are registering at about 500 degrees.

Mine usually sits at 200 when warmed up. I'm in Texas and the weather stays pretty hot out here.
