It is not hard to do. Remove the Transmission drive pulley cover on the right side of the bike. Loosen the rear axel nut and loosen both the left axel adjuster and the right axel adjuster and make sure that you turn them the same amount to help keep them lined up. With the extra slack in the drive belt that you created by loosening the axel nut and the axel adjusters, you can easily remove the old Transmission drive pulley and install the new Transmission drive pulley. With the Transmission drive pulley cover off, you can see the retaining nut that holds the Transmission drive pulley to the Transmission drive shaft. There are two Hex-headed bolts that hold a locking ring in place that must be removed first. After removing the two Hex-headed bolts and the locking ring, I put the Transmission in 1st gear and I used an impact wrench to help remove the retaining nut. Remember that this retaining nut has Left-handed threads, or counter-clockwise threads, meaning that they are the opposite of normal Right-handed threads and must be rotated clockwise, or to the Right to loosen this one nut. Once the retaining nut is off you can remove the old pulley by sliding it off of the Transmission drive shaft. Slide on the new pulley, install the retaining nut and TORQUE TO SPEC. (See Service Manual for spec. If you do not own a Service Manual please go buy or borrow one.) Place the locking ring on the retaining nut and tighten down the two Hex-headed bolts. Replace the Transmission drive pulley cover. Now tighten up the Left axel adjuster and the Right axel adjuster until the drive belt is correctly positioned, not too loose and not too tight. Tighten up the axel nut to the SPEC outlined in the Service Manual. Now, go ride it like you stole it.

Can someone post a part # for the harley or aftermarket 29 tooth pulley that fits the '09 Iron 883? I assumed that a 29 tooth pulley for all XL sportsters up to '07 would be the same fit on an '09 Iron, but I emailed the people at debrix.com who sell the pulley, and they say it doesn't. Thanks.

The late model (read Rubber Motor Mounted) XL883 Sportsters, both Carbureted and EFI, come stock with a HD 28 Tooth Transmission Drive Pulley and Harley makes and sells a 30 Tooth Transmission Drive Pulley that WILL fit right on. I was told by the HD counter guys that the HD 30 Tooth Transmission Drive Pulley is for the European/Overseas market but I had to problem having it ordered and sent here. I have no information about aftermarket Transmission Drive Pulleys for late model Sportsters. Sorry.

Thanks for the info, would you happen to have a part # for the HD pulley?

I believe the H-D part number is 40380-04

That was given to me by Cliff Steimle / Parts Manager / El Cajon Harley-Davidson

His phone number is 619-444-1123

It wouldn't hurt to call and confirm. I think it was around $65.00 and he told me they don't stock it, he would have to order it for me.

Perfect thanks! I'll give him a ring. One more thing...I don't have the 1200 conversion done on my bike and I was wandering if you noticed a major difference in low end power when you switched to the 30t?

I haven't done it yet.. My bike is a 1200 so it has a 29T now. Not sure it'll make much difference for me 29T to a 30T. But let us know if the P/N is correct. I don't wanna leave it up unless it's the right one
