Out for a quick ride yesterday, before the wife even got up ,to test out my new exhaust - Riding, and then all of a sudden, bike dies as if it wasn't getting any gas. I had to get a tow to bring it to the shop, a couple of towns away ($175--plus parts and labor - OOUUUCCCHHH) - With only 11,000 miles on my bike,it turns out the ignition module was the culprit -Just wondering,if that is real strange for that amount of miles, and could there be an underlying cause that could have made it blow-I'm a little parinoid now, untill I get a few miles on the bike, when I get it back,so I'll feel confident it won't happen again - Any imput appreciated!!! - THANX Gary
Was out riding last night and the same thing happened to me. After waiting for 2 hours for a tow, the very informed tow driver said he had seen quite a few problems with the ignitions on the sportys and that was probably what the problem was. Since this is the 2nd of July going into a holiday week end I will have to miss a few days of riding waiting for a shop to open up. This is a brand new bike with only 3k miles so it should still be under warranty. Don't really want to go the 2 weeks it usually takes to get service so am thinking of doing it myself. Will go get the HD manual. Does anyone have any better advice, is this something that a fairly mechanical person can do on their own? Thanks for the input.
The ignition module can easily be done if you are willing.
The factory service manual is a big help.
Personally, I am not going to use the HD rivets on my module cover
(my 2000 sporty has it under the right side cone) - the rivets are a stupid idea.
Tap and replace with threaded screws.
How about the replacement module though - my bike is suffering and I am
looking at Crane HI-4 with new coil.
Anyone care to comment on the Crane ? Will it at least WORK, unlike the Harley garbage.
Might as well get the Screamin' Eagle Ignition Module - I paid $127.95 (that is WITH tax!). And install was easy. Search the threads, there are two threads I am active in.
