Unfortunately, to do any tranny work, you will have to disassemble the engine.

Thumbs up almost there

OK, got a book, certainly helps. got the primary cover off, removed the primary drive and clutch pack.

All that is left it so borrow an 1 7/8 socket from a friend to get the belt drive pulley off and I can pull out the trans.

Not sure why I have several splintered gear teeth in the case but the pcs are sharp shards like the gear may have been crystallized or something.

Hopefully this will take care of the problem. Nothing like jumping in with both feet. So far there hasnt been anything that has caused me any concern as to being able to get this apart and back together. Not too bad.

Has anyone else had any trans problems with gear teeth being shattered?

Default mainshaft part number

Finally got everything aprart, turns out the mainshaft gear, (the gear the front drive belt pulley bolts to) has broken teeth. Trans is all good. Does anyone know the part number for this part? I would like to search for the part on the net and avoid the dealer gouge. The part presses into the case and the forward drive pulley is splined onto this part. There are also a couple of needle bearings inside this.
If anyone knows this part number, I would love to know what it is.
Thanks

Default tranny noise

well, turns out the problem was the final drive gear. Got it apart and took it to the dealer. They asked how many miles on the bike (4K) hearing that they asked if it was used as a drag bike (no). The gears on the final drive (the gear that goes through the case and has the front belt pulley splined onto it) were all worn and several were broken off. The mating gear showed no signs of wear. It appeared to be just a bad part. Metal seemed to have been crystallized, and brittle.
Stranger still, they had one in stock. Put it all back together, works perfectly now. No more knocking, no more gear whine that the bike had since I bought it.

So, I went from being afraid to try to free up a stiff clutch cable to removing, repairing and replacing the trans. Not afraid to try and tackle any repairs now (as long as I have the tools to do so).

Thanks to all for all the suggestions of what might be wrong.

KC

+1, I wish more people would follow up with the final cure after posting a problem, that's how we learn and it's kinda fun to see who's opinion was right.
