Default Carb help needed!

Hi all, I have a 91 sporty 1200, when she is running at regular speed on the highway and local city driving, she starts to sputter out until i give it a lil more gas than she will smooth out. Its almost like it stops getting fuel for a second. I think I might be running rich, but I dont know where the screw is to adjust it! I found the idle screw, but cannot find the other. I tried to search the net, but to no luck. If any of you know where it is, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks alot! Also, when I look at my plugs, they are covered with a black dry soot.

A 91? How long has it been since you rebuilt the carb?

im no sportster guru, but i think that has a keihin cv on it, the idle mixture screw is under a aluminum plug that has to be removed, sounds like the carb just needs to be gone thru. check this link out, will help you a bunch. chad.

Motor and carb was rebuilt around 2500 miles ago. I had a problem with the float being stuck open about two weeks ago, fixed that, but ever since than, have had nothing but problems!

This is all pretty much a contradiction. You have problems that will not be solved by turning a screw. The idle mixture screw has little to do with running at highway speed. Your CV carb uses fixed orifice jets for anything above the idle band. What size jets are in the carb and are they new/clean?

I would still question how well the float was adjusted as well.

Im sorry man, Im new to this. I really dont know what size the jets are. I used to have drag pipes on it, I switched back to the originals, due to the fact they had no baffles and they were loud as you know what. Heres what basically happened in my string of events lol.
I changed out the pipes, went for a ride for about thirty minutes, pulled it in the driveway, it ran really good. I'm teaching my wife to ride, she got on it, drove real slow up and down the driveway, when she stopped the bike she accidentally popped the bike in first gear without pulling in the clutch. The bike jumped of course, she held it up. We looked down, and saw fuel flowing out the overflow tube. I turned off the fuel at the petcock and began investigating. The next day, I took off the float on the carb, and found that my diaphragm was cracked. I replaced that, while I was at it I cleaned out the float area and the jets. It did not appear to be too dirty. I reassembled everything, and filled it up with premium, plus added some sea foam to help clean out what I might have missed. The bike started up, ran good for about two minutes than the fuel flowed out the overflow again. it was starting to snow, so put her away. The next day I went to look at it again. Turned the fuel on, this time there was no leak. I rode her around a while, no problems. About every other day now it starts to leak out the overflow. I bang on the float with a wrench and it stops. The plugs get fouled with a dry black soot. When riding she will run smooth than sputter, than run smooth again, than sputter. I know its a 91, but there is alot of work in it, she has the fat tank, custom paint, wide glide front in, all chrome, drag bars, spoked wheels, and raked. I just love the thing, but, I want to ride! LOL! Well, sorry about the book, hope it helps!

I'm not sure what your mechanical abilities are, but I still think you need to pull the carb off the bike and do (another ?) rebuild. It still sounds like your float level is screwed up or not seating properly.

The rebuild parts are very inexpensive. Look HERE for the deluxe rebuild kit.

Thanks for all the help all! I just wanted to try something, so I went out and put my drag pipes back on. Now the bike is running perfect, no problems at all! Is there a chance that the carb was set up for the drags?

IMO, Your drag pipes have nothing to do with what you described in post #6 above. It's just a matter of time until the float sticks again and you start dumping fuel on the ground.
