Transmission Swap
I've got a 1994 Sportster 883, with a recurring transmission problem. When I start in 1st gear from a stop, about half the time the tranny will slip out of gear, so I have to upshift to 2nd. I had a guy take a look and do some work on it, but the problem never went away. I'm starting to think that replacing the tranny whole will be an easier fix. I found a tranny for sale from a 2002 883 sportster for a really good price, but I have no idea if it will work. Any thoughts? Both the 1994 and 2002 are 5-speed

I still have my 2002, 883 trany from when I got the Baker XL6S.
The stock trany is missing 5th gear countershaft, if I remember correctly. It gets used on the Baker.
My stock trany had the same problem you describe. Never did figure out what the problem was.
