Default engine help

I have a 2003 sporty 883 engine i want to use for a sand drag project. it is a stock motor with no cams, ignition, wiring, carb or primary cover.

my question is since i don't want to use a wiring harness what can i do to use a older points style ignition?
Can I use older style cams and cover with points ignition setup?

the cam cover thats on it now has no place to adjust the points like my 87 does therfore i am assuming it should have a electronic ignition but I am doing this on a budget and would like to use points ignition with factory ebay cams and whatever covers i need to get, stock coil and mikuni 39mm carb off my 400ex.

can I get a 39mm Mikuni 400ex carb to work?

thanks in advance

why don't you want to use a wiring harness? You wouldn't need the entire harness, just what it takes to start/run the bike. Seems to me that converting it to something it's not is gonna cost more than bringing it back to what it should be. JMO

build one. If all you need is ignition, gather the wires and parts and make it happen. I'm no bike builder or electrician, but when I need something done cheap and right, I do it myself! buy a manual. they have a complete wiring diagram. It can't be THAT hard (can it??).

BTW, I saw a complete harness on ebay for about 50 bucks

Stock motor= stock cam, stock ignition=cheapest method=slow runs. Unless you are trying to get the most out of a "stock" engine.

What Frame are you putting it in? That might drive component placement and maybe nudge you in a particular direction.

cheapest way? BUY A MANUAL and read up on the wiring.
your best bet is go to ebay a OEM ignition 4 that motor is $25, you can build your own wiring harness reading the manual.
any carb of a 87 sportster will fit on a 2003 you gotta use the 87 manifold too to make it work.
if you don't buy a manual your going to spend WAYY more $$ than if you don't, i have a Clymer 86-2003 and a factory HD service manual for my engines year.
go to ebay and buy a used wiring harness if your not able to read a manual, they're cheap as f--k but noones gonna give it to you 4 free.

Yeah, get yourself a manual for the wiring, and ignition parts off ebay and wire it yourself without a harness. Or if you stretch your budget for an aftermarket ignition, the dyna 2000i nosecone module which can be had for a fraction of the dyna price if you buy it from Jireh cycles where they sell the same ignition under the ultima brand name. The entire module fits in the timing cover, simpler than points and just as clean in terms of wiring. Pretty much everything you need can be found fairly cheap on ebay if your patient. Funny thing is I have everything you need, old engine covers, old ignition, old carb.........but i'm too damn lazy to dig that crap out of my basement.

well drum i sure wish you would change your mind about diggin that stuff out.

so that helps alot and i have a manual on disk somewhere

does this mean that i can use any older style covers and not have to worry about oil passage and overheating issues?

i guess the plan is to use old covers with points ignition and wire it myself

I am putting it on a 2002 400ex chassis

thanks fellas
