i'm not sure about the covers at all.
its probably going to cost you more to convert that 03 than to just spend $30 on a used OEM ignition, well your missing alot of sh-t anyways so your going to be spending alot of $$ any way U do this, be aware alot of folks try to save $$ by taking what appears to be the cheapest path and end up spending 2x they would have spent had they did it right the 1st time.

Dude go to ATVConnection.com. There are hundreds of guys there who sand drag. Especially in the CanAm section.

I also drag race, sand / ice and asphalt. You asking a lot from both that 400ex frame and your 883. That frame will have to have the hell gusseted out of it plus stretched and your 883 will have to spin some awful high R's to turn paddle tires.

Eric Oldham (known as MrHorsepower) is a veteran sand dragger and builder(OMW Racing) from your neck of the woods (Kentucky). Here are a slew of quads he has built for sand dragging. He also owns the world record for it. Oh and his builds are single cylinder DS650's with up to 825 kits in them.

See them run.

As for covers, 94-03 all have the same covers, and also for the most part, just about anything is interchangable for those years on the motor.

i think hes going to use 87 covers on a 2003 883 thats why i said i'm unsure if that'll fly.
freebirds right about that frame gusset weld ins and HD motors are air cooled so not very good for high rev operations the pistons could disintegrate in the cylinder after awhile, this happened to my buell cyclone M2 engine after one too many hotrodding sessions out in the boonies.
if you change out to forged pistons it'll last longer but the pistons will eventually warp n you'll lose ring seal after awhile using sustained high rev operations, they use liquid cooled motors for good reason.
i think HD should have turned the sportster line to liquid cooling years ago.

that some pretty good information. I done this once with an 03 636 EFI kawasaki crotch rocket motor and it was in the high 4's. I am a welder and this is more of a challenge than anything else I just want a neat conversation piece and go to the drags occassionally, not every weekend.

that first video looks alot like B&M dragway thats close to me.

as far as the side covers I am not taking anything off of my bike, i just didn't know what year side covers would work.

does anyone have a parts number for the ignition that goes under cam cover? if i can get a stock one for $30, i think thats the way to go.

I don't know the part numbers, but remember the stock ignition module will be both a seperate module to mount under the seat or something, along with a pick up sensor disc for under timing cover, and also the timing cup that bolts to the cam.

would this work with the cam cover that i already have? there is no hole in this cover like there is on my 87 to adjust the points.
what would i need to get this dyna s ignition to work.

for some reason i can't find a 2003 factory ignition set-up

Dude,

Your going to need to spell out what your doing. I can't make heads or tails out of it.

If your trying to interchange 1987 motor parts ( cams, covers, etc.) into a 2003? it is not going to work. Why you would want to run points confuses me.

If its a 2003 motor your building, do you have a service manual for a 03?

The 883 CAN be set up to race. They have drag packages/kits for them that smoke. You wouldn't want a 1200+ in that motor, cause for dragging it will need to sustain at least 6500rpms to 6900rpms. Maybe more after. Most the sand drags are only 300'. The extra metal in the 883 will be a must. Then you tackle the clutch, sprocket gearing, tire size and paddle count to get the most out of it. Pingle shifters are nice. lol

But you'll need to stage 3 the heads and pick the cams you'll need for the R's you want to run, have NHRS do your heads and cams, You can tell Dan what you want to do and he will be glad to help you achieve it. At a great price. Boy Cast Iron jugs would be the ticket for you. Then you'd be ready to put it on the bottle. lol
