So the fuel line will drop below the fuel pump before the tank is dry. You were extremely close to being "empty" if you put in 2.38 gallons.
are you serious? nearly a gallon of unusable fuel, i was told it was more like a half a gallon.

right to the top only took 2.38 gallons so i had nearly 1 gallon left in the tank
other times i have had the light come on as early as 65-70 miles and only put in
1.6 gallons so dont trust the light. you have 2 trip meters always reset one when you fill up and you will be good to go.

by the way, where did you end up buying your bike?
found it on ebay, 50 miles from where i live

Any fuel pump problems by rising the tank?

the GAS LIGHT pulls false alarms. It does that on my IRON 23.1 miles into a full fill up. I disregard that thing. I just fill up every 90 miles. Never let her run dry...

I don't know what it exactly is but I would suspect it to probably be around 1/2 gallon maybe a tad more. That is why everyone that had fuel injected sportsters was freaking out about the new 48 only having a 2 gallon tank, so it only actually has around 1.5 gallons usable.

Plus I am very conservative when it comes to gas. Having a half gallon left would make me nervous as hell even though on the bike that would get you 20-30 miles further down the road. I have a running out of gas phobia I guess.

After pushing my Iron around a parking lot after catching a nail, I'm always nervous about running out of gas. Sportsters are freaking heavy. I always fill up at 80miles or when my fuel light flips on.

yea, i just got a 2012 iron about a month ago and im still trying to figure out my bike. I was also concerned about the gas light turning on at about 67 miles after a fill up.

2012 Iron and the fuel light never shuts off. Had it into the dealer, they said they fixed it, went outside and it was still on. I also get my neutral light and key light going on and off randomly as well. I will get it dealt with before the warranty expires. Not impressed with HD wiring. I also fill up around 100 miles as well.

In addition to not actually have 3.3 gallons, you need to take into account that the fuel keeps the pump cool. Running it down to the point it almost is out of useable gas is bad for the pump. I go about 100 miles between fillups. Usually right at 2 gallons.

I'm still learning the quirks of my Iron, the fuel light came on at 89 miles on the odometer. So far I'm at 101 miles on the odometer of my 2012 and figure I'll stop for gas on the way home from work tonight.
