So I just dropped my bike off at the local Harley dealer this morning to get the 1k service. I own a 2009 Iron. Not that bad of a price actually, $238 compared to $175 and $225 at the only local independent shops.
I decided to stick with Harley for this service because the other 2 places didn't sound like they knew wtf they were doing, nor could I get a hold of them for days. Not to mention, they told me to come drop off my bike on Monday for the service, and they aren't even open on Mondays. Customer service is a HUGE deal for me when it comes to spending money.
Anyway...dropped it off and they printed me out the sheets on future maintenance.
I've had other locals tell me that after the initial 1k service, that I only have to have service done by someone or myself every 5k miles and to follow the Harley guide. Why is Harley throwing in 2500 and 7500 mile services? I looked at the paper and hell...one of them was just an overall inspection of the bike and it costs $118! Check tire pressure, tread, brake pads, all lights...etc...
But what happens if you dont ride a high mileage. Should it be done every year if you dont manage to reach 5000? This is what I have been used to doing on my previous bikes.
I have the lifetime service agreement with Harley. Here is a rundown of what they did at the 1000 mile service;
O-Ring, Drain Plug- .095
Gasket, Clutch Cover, Squ- 1.95
Oil Filter, Chrome Superp 13.95
SAE 20W50 Motor Oil, Unit 17.85
Brake Clean 3.95
Formula+ Lubricant, Quart 7.95
Labor 240.00
Shop Supplies 12.00
tax 2.94
Went in to my local dealer for new rear tire week of hog rally. They told me my clutch needed lubed and cleaned really bad. I told them to just change my friggin tire.
Funny part is they just did 10,000 mile service less than 1500 mls ago.
All depends on how well you take care of your bike. I couldn't even begin to tell you how many times a bike has come in for a 2500 service and the tires have been below 15psi. 2500 services are fairly basic. Change engine oil and filter, check tire pressure and tread depth, check brake pad thickness, tighten and clean battery bolts, check charging voltage and road test. On springer models it's when you adjust the rocker arm bearings.
