if you're brave as hell, you can get the engine good and hot, then spray it with purple degrease. let that cook in, then spray it off with cold water. it'll etch the rocker covers and you'll never have to worry about rust. it'll also alter the color of the paint so it may not be worth it.
actually i tried using wd when doing the rubbing and i found it to be just messy. i stopped cleaned it off and started again and just the scotch pad worked beautifully.
