I cannot figure out EFI mods
I know that when you upgrade the intake (S.E., Heavy Breather, whatever) and exhaust, the EFI computer has to be tweaked to compensate for the increase in air/fuel and exhaust scavenging. Fine.
I understand that HD can download (remap) new data into the stock computer to adjust for the mods. This (I think has to be adjusted using the dyno? Or can it stand alone?
I know there are non-HD computers (Power Commander, Fuel Pak, etc) that essentially plug in to the stock harness and are pre-loaded with air/fuel maps that are designed to work with that particular bike, intake, and exhaust, more or less. What I'm not sure of is whether these require dyno tuning or not? And are their maps comparable to the HD maps? I have heard that HD's maps are very conservative and really don't change things as much as a non-HD map does.
I'm wanting to add a Heavy Breather to my Nightster (already have S.E. exhaust) and am trying to make a good choice for the EFI mods. Can someone straighten me out on this issue?
Many thanks!
The HD download does not use a dyno but works best with all HD SE accessories.
The add on controllers do not require a dyno especially if someone who knows what they are doing programs them in the first place, a dyno sure can help though to get the most out of it.
HD map upgrades are somewhat conservative due to EPA bs.
I went with a PCV from Fuelmoto, it was pre loaded and was just plug & play, I recently had it dyno'd and the map supplied is pretty darn close but could use a bit of dyno time to make it perfect. The dyno sheet is in my gallery.
The HD download is a waste of money because they are bound by the EPA so it's still too lean.
On the other hand, MAPS from Fuelmoto and others, tend to be a little too rich. They do this to make sure they aren't burning up any motors out there. That's why a finish dyno tune is recommended but if you're happy with the tune and aren't fouling plugs and the plugs look good - leave it be.
Most of the fuel management devices work with your stock ECM. Some, like the ThunderMax, has its own ECM and some, like the SERT, SEST, TTS, are software with a dongle that plugs into the ECM to program and leaves no hardware on the bike. That is nice when things start getting crowded under the seat with LED load equalizer's or whatever.
Personally, I wouldn't use anything that took the O2 sensors out of the equation. Like the Fuel Pak from V&H. If you're gonna have all that technology on the bike you might as well get the full use out of it.
On the other hand; I'd be just as happy with a carb. Maybe happier.
