Since i had the 1000 mile service done, i've noticed a backfire that sounds like its coming from the air cleaner/carb, right when i rev the engine before engaging the clutch to pull out in first gear from a stop. Doesn't do it every time. Maybe 50% of the time. Any ideas ?
does the bike seem to have more power than before you took it in?
my first guess is also the rich/lean issue- and as above, you can tell if its too rich by pulling a plug and looking at it.
if it is too rich, it should be pulling stronger than before. the factory sets the bikes a bit too lean for fuel economy. it is possible that they adjusted this.
Seems to have the same amount of power.
I ask them about it today. They said they did no adjustment. They just pulled the plugs and put them back. It was also a quart low on oil when i got it back.
The mechanic admitted to checking the oil with the bike standing straight up and not leaning on the jiffy stand like he should have. They say they test drove it 8 miles after the service and found no problems.
I'll look at the plugs in the morning. Too dang hot out right now.

Yeah, that's kinda wierd that they didn't do any tune adjustment and it's backfiring. Man, you have an 06 with only 1000 miles on it!
I wouldn't think the oil level would have a lot to do with the backfiring. +1 one on seeing what the plugs look like. Did they change the plugs or just put the same ones back in?
I guess you could also see if there's any type of leak on the exhaust gaskets. Usually they will warranty their service for a month or so as well; you might be able to bring it back in and have them try to figure it out. Did you have it done at the stealer?

Good luck!
I just bought it 2 weeks ago with 916 miles on it.
They put the same plugs back in. Yup, the stealer.
An 06 with 1000 miles, sounds like the bike was sitting for a while. If it was improperly stored, the carb could be gummed up. The carb mite need to be cleaned, something your tech should have thought of. What color are your spark plugs?
Sounds like a pretty standard lean backfire,or in other words "carbfart"
Do a search, you'll find hundreds of posts.
Initial mixture is lean and when then vacuum increases the slide lifts allowing a lean mix of air and fuel in,and then it backfires.
I run a custom made intake breather setup on my 883 with a 48 slow at 1/2 turn out.
Ive tried alot of options, from different needles, needle shims, various main jet sizes,,and One of the best options personally i feel would be a higher flow accelerator pump, with a 45 pilot.
I dont beleive the stock pilot/needle combo responds efficiently to the air intake amount
