Not sure if its something or nothing at all but I've been noticing when my wife is riding her 99 sporty and me on my bike that when she down shifts through the gears coming upto a stop that the shifting sounds really loud compared to my bike. Are the sporty's noisy downshifting or is this something that needs to be addressed? I changed the oil in it not too long ago.
Sportys have been known for their "clunky" shifting. My '08 does it upshifting and downshifting. If you are hearing something else then you might need to get it looked at
Shifting down into 1st gear is the loudest on my sporty, but yeah all the gears are a bit loud. It has a clunking sound, if it sounds more like grinding then you should get it checked out.
Your trans oil is changed (assuming correct oil - try the Harley brand dino oil to rule out a variable), check your clutch adjustment (behind the derby - next oil change and cable) and lube your clutch cable.
Unless the clutch disks (metal, fiber or both) are worn or glazed (maybe the fibers sticking because of incorrect oil additives), an issue with the clutch basket itself or worn shaft or bearings....I doubt these though and you can inspect at next trans oil change.
The cluck is more than likely normal.
Avoiding the clunk with smooth clutch operation, smooth foot shift action, throttle application, and braking can be made into a challenging game.....fun.

Reason: spilleng
Just get into a group of harleys on a ride somewhere and enjoy the klunking sounds right before your group takes off.. it's almost better than the potato song.
