I have owned quiet BMWs and Yamahas and loud Harleys; traffic definitely picks you up better on a louder bike, yes from the front too. Sound only travels backwards is a joke. Have you never heard a loud bike coming at you down the road? Your lying if you say you haven't. The AMA and Cycle World are trying to preserve motorcycling and can't offficially endorse illegal, most aftermarket exhaust is illegal, mufflers. I agree that at a certain point it becomes obnoxious and safety should be balanced with common courtesy. I recently took off my SE IIs because they were too loud for my 6 am commute. Loud pipes and bright colors/chrome save lives. I like the dark custom look but the flash of your loud chrome mufflers may save you some day as it's best to been seen and heard.

There is all kinds of actual fact, data, and testing that proves that loud pipes do NOT save lives. You can find it on the AMA website, as well as on several other enthusiast sites, such as Cycle World, etc... Where is yours? Oh, wait, there isn't any. Anywhere. There could be a reason for that. And to call someone idiotic for having a different opinion is not brilliant, particularly when you can't even spell.
can anyone back me up here. i dont need the ama to tell me when i sit on my porch i can hear bike go by. i guess there all going away from me. what more evedence do you need. you said somthing stupid. just get over it. and dont you worry about my spelling. instead of proof reading my **** why dont you take a listen to whats around you. if im sitting at a stop sign i can hear a bike coming. and if you cant you have problems. common sense is ALL you need to figure out that loud pipes save lives. we should start a thread and see.

Ooh, an internet thread. Yeah, that's scientific evidence. I ask for proof, and you say you don't need any. Yup, that's brilliant. Now, why didn't I think of that? Oh, perhaps because I'm not a complete moron. It must be nice to already know everything. Except, of course, English, spelling, grammar, logic, etc. See, then you don't have to listen to evidence, you don't have to think at all, you can just keep your prejudices. Minds like yours are what kept Black people and women from equality in this country for all those years. Fine, keep your loud pipes, and we'll all blame a... people like you when all motorcycles are outlawed. The crux of the issue is that we don't need to do anything that makes our image any worse than it already is with the general public. The vast majority of people (including riders) don't want to hear loud pipes, and will vote away our rights/privileges given the opportunity.
dude you have issues man. i didnt say anything about women or black people. i may be sloppy at typing but this is all going over your head... WHEN YOU HEAR A LOUD BIKE YOU LOOK!!!! and your so damn oblivious. you keep your racial accustions away from me. your just some idiot that loves to hear him self talk... good luck to you buddy ... ****
I really don't think anything is going to save you these days because of the overall stupidity of people and their snobbishness thinking that "THEY" own the road and that you need to wait for them.
I was at a redlight the other day and a young teenage girl had her iPod earphones in and had her head down texting.....after the light turned green, she couldn't even hear the people honking at her
So many threads turn into opinions....the OP asked one simple question!!! Cagers just suck in general....I have V&H on mine and love the sound....screw what other people think or what neighbor gets pissed off. Be guaranteed that when they need something from me, my loud pipes won't be on their mind!!!
I've done the thumbscrew thing on an old Yamaha XS650 I had with some shorty mufflers on it. Actually worked pretty well both for both restoring some low end torque as well as taking the edge off the sound.
That being said, tonight I'm installing V&H "quiet" baffles into my wife's Short Shots on her 09 1200C. I'll report later this evening on how much it changes the sound. The stock baffles in those Short Shots are LOUD!
so awesome...
when my neighbor fires up his 87 XLH with drags.. I get annoyed.
When I start my yamaha with **** custom cans... I get annoyed.
When some dude one a bike blows past me on the freeway and I crack the window to hear the bike and cant hear him... I get impressed.
Dude you are an idiot. Do you actually believe that sound only travels in one direction? So once a fire truck passes you, you can no longer hear the sirens? When a car has subwoofers booming, you cant hear them unless you are in the passenger seat of that car? You never hear a Harley coming/ Only hear it once it drives past you? Because "all the sound comes outof the back" You are an idiot.
