Default cleanning the engine

I wanted to clean the grey powder coated parts on the engine. Took a rag with some auto soap, did not appear to make any headway, however, it seemed like some of the coating was starting to come off on one spot. So, I am wondering what everyone here uses to clean thier Nightsters or Irons with the coated engines?

I use a little MEK (Mythol ethol keytone) on a rag to clean the painted engine parts of my 1200 low. Be careful with it and try not to breath any of it. You can get it at Ace Hardware.

Wear gloves around MEK poison is absorbed by skin and stored in liver/kidneys for life, just a little EMT info

I use Armor All brand car wash, HOT water, and a really soft car wash brush. Takes everything off, & leaves the paint alone.

Or with any good car soap mixed EXACTLY to directions. I like Meguar's NXT soap, and a round parts brush.

I would be a little leery regarding use of MEK, over a period of time, repeated use will take its toll by slowly removing the powder coat. Once upon a time as part of job, I had to remove powder coating from industrial instrument panels in order to refurb. My method was to soak the parts in MEK for 2-3 days. It would flake right off, needing only a little sanding to smooth out the surfaces.

For a really bad stain or tar, maybe MEK once in awhile, and only with a rag blotting and wiping on the localized spot.

Respectfully,

Can you show me a source for this info? As far as I know, low levels of MEK (as described by usage) does not cause short or long term health effects. Now, if we're talking about high dosage daily, that's a different story.

Years ago I worked as a welder at a plastic tank manufacturing plant making the steel frames for the plastic tanks. Fabricators of the plastic tanks used MEK like water to clean the plastic, it stated on the 55gallon tin that it was carcinogenic. As an EMT I use gloves to work with patients and around automotive oils.
I have no specific data to quote, just some life lesson, I apologize if I came across as a know-it-all again I won't work around oils or patients without gloves-it probably won't make much of a diff at my age, peace out, Herb
