Long story short, my iron cross A/C flew off on the highway and I had a spare Stage 1 A/C with missing parts. Took the stealership a week and a half to get the parts so figured, I'd use the waiting time to paint the ugly gray off my Nightster.

More pics

I need to get used to this bigger A/C as the iron cross was a bit smaller but it'll do for now. On a positive note, it seemed like my bike wasn't revving as much at higher speeds and I'm wondering if the previous owner remapped the ECM for this particular A/C and not the iron cross. Or it could be that I'm just making that up in my head after not being able to ride for almost 2 weeks.

Finally, a shout out to midnight2005 and DocHoliday06 for helping me out and answering questions I had for them. Definitely nice to know there are good folks on this forum that are willing to help anyone out whenever asked.

First of all, bet masking job EVER on the frame

Secondly, I totally agree about the grey. That was one factor that steered me from a nightster to a 48 (there were others) but I didn't like the chrome rocker cover to black cylinder fin top to grey cylinder fin lower to grey cases. Yuck. It's all a matter of personal preference and I did NOT prefer that grey.
Your's looks as it should. Nice job!

I'm not a huge fan of chrome either and me being a newbie made a nice scratch with the wrench on the rocker cover...so I took some scotch brite and dulled it out a little bit, mainly to get rid of the scratch but also not to make it so shiny. Also did the vertical tubes (not sure what the technical name for those are).

I was thinking about doing the heat shields and the muffler as well but the lazy factor kicked in and also i hear that with it dulled out there's more chance of rust setting in. I figured I'd run over the rocker covers with some good ol' Rem Oil once in a while.

Nice job. Looks good.
They're called "push-rod tubes". There's rods inside them that go from your cams via the lifters to the rockers above. Hence, the term "rocker box covers", which are made out of aluminum and won't rust. Rockers activate your valves.
That black finned thing on top is the "head" and that's where the valves are. They made 'em black to make it look like a hot rodded motor from yesteryear. I couldn't understand why they didn't make the motor all black, until the Iron came out.

That looks really awesome.. I'd like to do the same, I was considering using rhino liner for some of it but this looks really good. What kind of paint did you use? Some of that high temp. paint I assume?
