When I was considering my purchase everybody I talked to said if you're gonna get a Sportster get the 1200, you won't be sorry. Get the 883 and you'll wish you got the 1200 inside 1 month. I'm not sorry.

Cool 883 / 1200 two different animals

I just could not see sending almost $3000 for an extra 7 HP plus slightly higher insurance premiums and slightly less fuel economy.

As far as I am concerned, the XL883C is the most perfect motorcycle ever to come out of a factory.
7 HP diff,,,more like 25,,
883 at 75 mph on the super slab Is turning about 4,200 RPM's
1200 at 75 mph---------------------------------3,500 RPM's
1200 Is 3 to 5 lbs less cause the cylinder walls are thinner,,

883 has plenty of Yank,,due to lower gearing.
better MPG yup,,bout 10-12%.

They are both great Urban bikes,,Only reason I didn't get the 883
I knew I was gonna be on Interstates alot.
My 1200 "Dog Bone" lets a little vibration through at 4,000 RPM's
I'm always below that.
For me,,on the 883 I'd be at 4,200-4,400 rpms too often.

Osco has the concise, correct answer. Give a nod to the 1200 for significant super slab riding. Otherwise, the 883 has better gearing, smoothness, cost, and fuel requirements. The 883 loves to cruise at 60-65. If you typically cruise at higher speeds, get a 1200.

We Need a Good Sticky on this often asked 883 or 1200 question.
Yeah If most of my riding was urban Idda got me an 883,,,
My 1200 Is a gas hog In the city,,,31-36 mpgs.
My Ins agent asked If It was over 1,000 cc,,different rate.
My Salesman asked If I Intended to do 100 mile Interstate rides
and was gonna be wanting to keep up with Baggers,,,
stuff like that,,
All this should be coverd.

Mine is a 883hugger....sure i would have loved to have a 1200 but for 5 bills i can make it 1200 pretty easily....for me its jsut right...im not interested in riding the slab i love the backroads and the 883 has more than enough umph for me right now
really dont have enough reason to get rid of mine its paid for i got it cheap and in a year or so gonne get something bigger like a softail but plan on keeping the Sporty if i can get a pass from the boss (wife)

I just bought a 2011 XL883L. It come with any displacement you want as long as it is 883. Since we are novice riders and will take the class next spring, I don't think it will be an issue.

So, what is the harm of the 883 and if you get bored, upgrade it to a 1200? I thought I head someone say that an 883 to 1200 makes more power than a stock 1200?

I got a 1200 as my 1st bike this month because I knew that I'd eventually want a 1200 and I didn't want to have to deal with the overhead and cost of upgrading down the road.
