I was talking to a buddy and asked him... when do you shift into 5th? He said 40mph. I thought that was low... but he has years of riding on me.
Some variables.
1) I have a stock 06 1200c.
2) He has a Stage one (pipes - rejet and air clearner) on his 6 year old Dyna.
He is what I do last time I looked.
1st to 2nd - 10mph
2nd to 3rd - 20mph
3rd to 4th - 30 to 35mph
4th to 5th - 50 mph.
I don't think that I look at the speedo when I change gears. I listen to the engine. If I am just toolin' around, I tend to ride in higher gears at a little lower speeds. If I need to go faster, I don't change until the rpms are up there some.
Your speed does not matter as much as your RPMs. I typically up-shift at 3000 rpm. How fast you are going when you hit 3000 rpm depends, its different if you are going up-hill or down hill, if you have a passenger etc...
Actually I go by the sound of the engine. As others have stated, it depends on the cops. I keep the rpms low for a quieter take off. If thats the case then I am usually in 4th by 35mph or so. If I am being a hellion....see above.
