When i get done rideing my sportster, i go to shut it off. but it turns over a few more times? can some one help me out? i think it is not fireing hot eungh but before i startde to monkey around with it, i would ask the all knowing wrold what they think... well what do you think?
Same thing happened to me when using 87 octane gas. Try using the next grade up (89) and see if that helps. Also check your plugs and see what they look like.
This sometimes happens when your throttle is open too far at idle. Back off your idle adjusting screw and re-adjust your mixture screw to get the proper idle.
You didn't mention what ride you have nor what gas you have in it, Madgoat. It shouldn't do that on an 883. A 1200 will do that on low-octane gas, as will any high-compression engine. Too, I've heard of a hot spark plug causing it.
It shouldn't do it on an 883 with 87 octane gas but it does in fact do it on mine. Cheap way to find out is put a higher octane gas in it and try it. Shouldn't cost more than 50 cents or so and won't hurt to try.
My '04 1200 did that as well. I switched to 89 and now it happens maybe once every 6-7 times I shut it off. I feel like octane is not the only thing, but next time I fill up, I'm going premium - especially with today's gas prices in Atlanta ($1.98 for 87!!). Maybe then it will stop. If not, I am going to have the plugs looked at.

Look in your owner's manual, onehotmamma; your '04 1200 should be fed 91 octane.
Agreed, try running 91 octane that should help. I used to have the same problem with my dirt bikes so now I always run 91 octane It's worth the extra 50 cents and my street bike has never had a problem.
