Interesting Dealership Experience
Took about a week for them and finally got a call that the bike was ready. Went to pick it up, filled out the paperwork, paid the deductible, the normal chit chat and a handshake and off I go headed back home. Hit the highway and as habit, stretching out my legs on my mustache bars (with mid controls) and something doesn't feel right. Can't find anywhere to put my foot...look down and something doesn't look right...look down again and the damn mustache bar is GONE.
I get off the next exit and head back to the dealership and once I get off the bike, I notice that the bracket is still on the frame but the rest of the setup broke off.
The guys told me they rode about 30 miles trying to trigger the engine light to come on but couldn't replicate the issue but if the thing fell off, they would have known about it as I'm sure the bump they felt as they run over a bent metal bar should be indication that something is wrong. We check the shop and nothing there either.
As I'm following the service guy around it seems a little suspicious. He wasn't too surprised when I mentioned that my Sporty was missing a part and he also seemed to recollect details like what type of foot peg I had on there so it almost made me think that they knew about it but just didn't mention it hoping I wouldn't find out?!? Or it could just be me being paranoid.
Anyways, he states that he'll make it right and starts looking in the HD parts catalog but of course HD doesn't make any mustache bars for Sportsters or he can't find any. He asks me what brand it was but I have no idea as it was on there when I bought it used from the previous owner and luckily they had the contact info of the previous owner in their system so they give him a call.
This is where the twist kicks in but it turns out that the guy took a mustache bar off a wrecked bike and fabricated it to fit my bike. Something about turning it upside down, heating the metal and bending it, and painting it black...LOL. After the call the service guy hints once or twice at how the bar broke off because heated metal loses strength and it was bound to happen but in the end makes it right. His words were something to the effect of because this happened while in his possession, he's going to take care of it by ordering parts and installing it at no cost to me. He found some after market parts that aren't bars but bolt on to where the forward controls go and we'll see if that works on the bike and if I like it when it's on there.
Just figured I'd share the experience since it's not everyday you take your bike to a dealership and it comes back with a missing limb. Definitely appreciate the service and the attitude and hopefully all dealerships would treat their customers the same way but not sure if that would be the case from some rants I've read on this forum.
I'm wondering if it fell off when they jacked it off or something but the guy's real nice so it's kind of hard for me to think that he knew about it but would play it off like he didn't. Just doesn't sound like that kind of guy but who knows...I've never had the beer with the guy or hung out so could be a facade for customers.
In any case, not sure if it would have fallen off in the near future or not but cool thing is it happened when they had possession so I get a new highway peg setup.
Think this is the one they ordered: Drag Specialties Adjustable Highway Peg
If you can find the bar again, let me know. Not sure how this setup would work but as long as it feels okay, I'm thinking I'd go with it since I have no intentions of putting forward controls on.
