Part numbers? Why?

Question about P/N's. I see lots of people asking for them. Why? Am I to gather that one needs to know the P/N of whatever it is he/she wants to buy? You can't just walk into a dealer and say I want a (insert part here) for a (insert year here)? Seriously? What am I missing? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Just can't believe that it's a prerequisite to know your P/N's before you plunk down your cash.

It's cheaper to order parts online. Most of the time you'll need the part #.

If you are trying to locate a part it's easy to call around and have the parts guy run a p/n check to see if they have it in stock. I'm sure everyone has there own reasons but this is one that I've used.

Sometimes its juat easier to search or have someone search for a product with a part number. A part number narrows the parts search down to the year fitment, color, size, etc...

for the same reason mreed said.....to buy them online at half the cost of the fvcken rapist dealers. btw, have you ever called pep boys or whatever famous car part store and ask them for something? they ask make, model, year, displacement, 2/4 door i mean it's ridiculous, if i had a part # i'm only talking to that monkey for about 2min. tops. i don't see what's so hard to understand?

You need to know the part number to make sure it fits your bike. I have a 2003 883r and a lot of the parts from the 2004 and up Sportsters don't fit my bike. So having the right part number is crucial to getting something that fits my bike
