Default Fork oil

I'm at about 18,500 miles on my bike and in reading I saw I should change fork oil at 20,000. Is this difficult to do and what kind of oil goes into it? I just have basic tools. Do I need anything special to compress springs or jack the bike up? Thanks

You for sure need a cap nut socket. You can find them on ebay. I use Harley Screamin Eagle fork oil, but there are plenty of other good options.

I prefer to do part of this service with the bike on a jack, but it can be done without a jack. It's more difficult than just changing oil, that's for sure, but with minimal skills it's not all that difficult.

Here's how I did it. Super easy and took about 30 minutes with break the first time through.

1. Jack the front end of the bike up so it's clear and free of the ground.
2. Take off front wheel.
3. Unbolt the pinch bolts on the triple tree keeping the forks on. Then you can just slide the forks out. (Easier to do one fork tube at a time.)
4. Unscrew the fork cap. I used a large crescent wrench and taped off the fork tube caps with masking tape to keep them from scratching. It helps to have a partner hold the tubes while you unscrew.
5. Tip and pour out all the old fork oil. Refill with the correct amount and type. Mine was HD Type E available at the dealer.
6. Reverse to install.

Simple, minimal tools, and it's extremely easy. Mine had a noticeable handling difference when I put new oil in just because it had been sitting with junk in it for so long.
