Make sure the front end is off the ground. When you go to screw the caps back on,you'll have to use some force to push them down so you're gonna have to make sure your frame is secure from rocking forward onto your front wheel.

To get at the springs, I jack the bike up so the front wheel is off the ground. Then I take off the front wheel and remove the forks themselves. You are free to work with them individually and without worrying about swinging the bike around.

I do this because the bars are in the way and I can't get a socket on the fork caps. I can't tell if your apes have this hinderance as well. The stock spring pressure on the unloaded fork really isn't much, so you don't have to worry about blowing your hand off unless they are broken.
